Trade Show

Last week a friend invited me to go to a trunk show with her. I had never been to one before so I decided to tag along... A ""trunk show" is a special sale in which vendors present merchandise directly to store personnel or select customers at a retail location or another unique venue. In many cases it allows store personnel to preview and/or purchase merchandise before it is made available to the public. It is particularly desirable to have the actual designer present at the event. Most small businesses do this to get more buys." This specific trunk show was in a ladies basement that she had her dad make into a store. It was a really interesting experience for me because I wasn't sure what to expect. I was looking forward to meeting the designer and be inspired by her creativity, but she was not the actual designer. She just thought it would be a really cool idea to start her own little business in her basement and sell other peoples clothing. Now, I'm sure you are thinking KNOCK OFF's, right? Well it was definitely not that kind of show. The definition that I provided you earlier was exactly what this show was except she wasn't the actual designer. Kind of a cool concept right?

While I was at the trunk show and browsing through all the different clothing, accessories, etc. I thought to myself, why don't I do something along these lines. My basement is unfinished, I have my studio down there anyways, so why don't I create my own trunk show for friends and family to come check out my stuff. But my idea gets more interesting than that. Obviously I do not have a lot of overhead yet, but wouldn't it be different instead to have design sketches, fabrics, colors, etc. for you to pick out exactly what you like???? We talk details and your garment is made within the week. Anyways, just a thought that I have been pondering for the last few days. Hopefully as the Avant-Garde collection and Spring/Summer 2010 collection progresses, I will have a preview trunk show of some sort for all you guys to come check out.

What do you guys think of this idea? Would you come if this actually happened? Hope everyone had a great Holiday and Happy New Year!

AVANT-GARDE

Today is the day. I decided to dedicate my morning to designing some new dresses. I was inspired by the idea of over the top, unique lines, originality....avant-garde. For all those people out there that dont know what avant-garde means; Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo. I played with the idea of over the top ruffles, angled pleating, long/short dresses. Im still playing with fabrics, colors, and am always changing designs as fabrics and colors speak to me. As you may know, designing a collection can takes months of research, design changes, fabric changes, etc...So I want to bring you through the process with me and show you this collection from start to finish. I will upload my rough sketches that I have so far...feel free to leave comments on what you think! Stay tuned for many updates as the process will begin to be alot of fun!!
